In the early 19th century, the British annexed several princely states and formed the "Simla Hill States" in 1815. The British established Shimla as their summer capital and developed it into a major administrative and commercial center.
During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the people of Himachal Pradesh played an active role in the struggle against the British rule. However, after the rebellion was suppressed, the British consolidated their control over the region and continued to govern it as a part of Punjab Province.

Post-Independence: Following India's independence in 1947, Himachal Pradesh became a part of the Punjab state. However, due to the demand for a separate identity, it was given the status of a union territory in 1950. Over time, the people of Himachal Pradesh continued to press for statehood, which was finally granted on 25th January 1971, making it the 18th state of the Indian Union.
